High refrigerant costs, the need for new plants and pending patent issues put the use of HFC-1234yf more and more into doubt. Additional concerns over a likely retrofit of 1234yf systems with R134a would limit its use to only a few OE installations, while undermining the MAC Directive in Europe. Meanwhile, concerns over toxicity are exacerbated rather than alleviated, while several technical issues remain unresolved.
