Suppliers and manufacturers are displaying this week in Milan, Italy, their latest innovations at the leading exhibition for HVAC residential and industrial solutions. Refrigeration and heating equipment using R744 (CO2) is currently on display in this major show.

Combining the whole worldwide production and distribution line of the HVAC and plumbing sector together, the Mostra Convegno Expocomfort in Milan is a key event to discover latest trends and innovations. With a strong focus on green technologies, the showcase of several CO2 components and systems for refrigeration and heating equipment is attracting significant attention from industry experts.

The expo features residential and industrial HVAC technology 4 thematic areas: Heat, Energy, Cold, and Water.

Heating solutions

Leading suppliers of heating solutions are putting emphasis on increased efficiency and new energy sources. New technology adapted to European conditions presented in the show included models from:

  • Sanyo: Its new CO2 heat pump for Europe, with a capacity of 9kW, featured prominently in the stand from the leading Japanese manufacturer. The new heat pump, originally presented at the “Interclima” show in Paris last January, includes a two stage reciprocating compressor, the world’s first, and will be able to operate at external ambient temperatures down to -25° Celsius.
  • enEX: The Italian company presented a new water-to-water CO2 Heat Pump, based on groundsource energy. With high efficiency for water heating, reaching a COP of 4.5, it will soon be installed in a new residential construction in northern Italy. enEX believes there is potential for its new heat pump to be used in hotels, gyms and swimming pools, among others, where the demand for hot water heating is high.

Companies developing CO2-based components for Mobile Air Conditioining, such as Wieland, and Witzenmann, are also present in Milan, but showcasing components for heating solutions.

Refrigeration with natural refrigerants

The move towards environmental technology is also outstanding in the refrigeration sector, with several displays focusing on natural refrigerants and increased efficiency.

Bock is exhibiting a full range of compressors for commercial refrigeration equipment, including the line designed for transcritital CO2 systems, available for different temperature ranges and types of commercial and industrial applications. Similarly, Dorin also exhibits its CO2 compressor family.

Other companies presenting CO2-based equipment include:
  • Swep: The Swedish supplier exhibits its CO2 Gas Cooler for transcritical systems, which is already part of several supermarkets installations all over Europe.
  • HPH: An Italian SME, it has its own manufacturing of copper-based R744 Heat Exchangers for industrial applications.
  • Embraco: the Brazilian manufacturer is showcasing its CO2 Compressor for light commercial applications, including the display of a Casette system for vending machines. At the same time, the company is working on electronic control of the systems’ performance (VCC), which helps improve efficiency by better monitoring the system.
  • Bitzer: Exhibits its CO2 Compressor range for refrigeration, covering all temperature ranges and suitable to different types of systems, including cascade and transcritical systems.
  • Lu-ve: The Italian company showcases CO2 Gas coolers for large industrial installations.
  • Emerson: Displays compressors under the Copeland brand, for subcritical CO2 systems. The company also confirmed its cooperation with Rivalco, Italian supplier of Commercial Refrigeration equipment.
Background

The biennial international exhibition, Mostra Convegno Expocomfortm, reunites residential and industrial HVAC suppliers and manufacturers in a unique combination. Its 36th edition is taking place in Milan, Italy, from 11 to 15 March 2008.
Accompanying events in the same exhibition are the tradeshow “Next Energy: energy efficiency and renewable sources”, including a full programme of conferences, and Expobagno, representing the bathroom’s sector. With over 150,000 visitors in its last edition in 2006, the Mostra is one of the world’s leading exhibition for the whole HVAC sector.
